A tense situation unfolded on California's I-5 freeway, where a routine military demonstration turned into a close call for drivers and residents. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that shrapnel from artillery rounds, fired by the U.S. Marine Corps during a celebration, unexpectedly hit a patrol car. This incident occurred during a live fire demonstration marking the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary, which took place near Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.
The timing of this event was particularly sensitive, coinciding with the 'No Kings' protests against President Donald Trump and his administration. The protests were taking place across Southern California and the nation. As a result, a 17-mile stretch of the I-5, a major thoroughfare connecting Los Angeles to San Diego, was shut down by the CHP. This busy freeway typically accommodates over 80,000 daily commuters.
The CHP was informed by the federal government on Saturday morning that live artillery would be fired over the freeway. This led to the temporary closure of the freeway by highway patrol officers. However, the military had previously stated that no freeways or roads would be impacted by the event, and all activities would be confined to training fields at Camp Pendleton. Despite this, the federal government requested that the state change electronic highway signs to read 'LIVE WEAPONS OVER FREEWAY'.
The CHP received reports of shrapnel raining down on the freeway during the closure, and a patrol SUV was struck by a piece of shrapnel, causing a two-inch by half-inch dent in the hood. An officer working the freeway closure also reported hearing what sounded like 'pebbles' falling on his motorcycle. The CHP immediately alerted the Marine Corps to the situation, and the firing of additional live ordinance was canceled.
