Uganda mourns the loss of a true patriot and freedom fighter, Emmanuel Kafuniza, whose life story is as inspiring as it is humbling. Born into a nation yearning for liberation, he dedicated his life to the fight for Uganda’s independence and unity. But here’s where it gets even more remarkable: from his humble beginnings in Nyabuhikye, Ibanda District, Kafuniza’s journey mirrored Uganda’s own struggle for self-determination, making his legacy all the more profound.
Emmanuel Kafuniza, born in 1953 to Yosan Kafuniza and E. Kobuhire, rose above modest circumstances to become a towering figure in Uganda’s political and social landscape. His family, with heavy hearts, announced his passing on Thursday, 6th November 2025, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi. The nation now prepares to bid him farewell as he returns to his ancestral home in Nyabuhikye for his final resting place.
The farewell ceremonies began with an official vigil at Rivonia Suites Restaurant in Mbuya on Friday, 7th November, followed by a solemn funeral service at All Saints Church, Nakasero, on Saturday, 8th November, at 10:00 a.m. A second service was held in Nyabuhikye on Sunday, 9th November, at 2:00 p.m., bringing together family, friends, and admirers to honor his memory. The burial is set for today, Monday, 10th November 2025, in Nyabuhikye, Ibanda.
Kafuniza’s early life was marked by determination and resilience. Educated at Kazo Boarding Primary School, Kitante Hill School, and Makobore High School, he was poised for greater opportunities, even qualifying for a scholarship to the United States. Yet, fate kept him in Uganda, where he turned to cattle trading with a small loan from his father. Through hard work and integrity, he built a modest but respected livelihood, earning a reputation for reliability and diligence. And this is the part most people miss: his entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for his later leadership roles, proving that greatness often begins in the simplest of endeavors.
The 1970s were a turning point for Kafuniza, as he joined the Uganda National Liberation Front – Anti-Dictatorship (UNLF-AD), a movement dedicated to overthrowing tyranny and restoring democracy. His organizational prowess and unwavering commitment earned him a place in the UNLF High Command, where he played a pivotal role in developing guerrilla warfare strategies. These efforts later merged with Yoweri Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA), shaping Uganda’s path to liberation. Kafuniza himself described their unit as a ‘human-resource factory’ for the resistance—a bold claim that underscores his impact.
But here’s where it gets controversial: While Kafuniza is celebrated as a hero, some critics argue that the methods employed during the liberation struggle were not without moral ambiguity. Were the ends truly justified by the means? We invite you to share your thoughts in the comments below.
Post-liberation, Kafuniza continued to serve Uganda with distinction. As a Local Council leader and later a Resident District Commissioner, he maintained strong ties with grassroots communities, particularly in Ibanda District, where his leadership and dedication to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) left an indelible mark. His efforts in guiding local development initiatives showcased his unwavering commitment to public service.
In his later years, Kafuniza served as a Senior Presidential Advisor, sharing his wealth of experience with the nation’s leadership. Colleagues remember him as a man of quiet strength, composure, and principle—a leader whose actions spoke louder than words. His integrity and patriotism remain a beacon for future generations.
As Emmanuel Kafuniza is laid to rest today, Uganda reflects on the loss of a man who gave his all for his country. His legacy is not just in the battles he fought but in the values he embodied: integrity, patriotism, and a lifelong dedication to public service. But we must ask: In today’s Uganda, are we upholding the ideals he fought for? Or have we strayed from the path of unity and self-determination? Share your thoughts below—let’s honor his memory by continuing the conversation he started.
