Imagine a desert island transformed into an open-air art gallery, illuminated by the magic of light. That's precisely what's happening in Abu Dhabi, where Jubail Island has become the canvas for 'Manar Abu Dhabi,' a mesmerizing light art exhibition. This incredible event showcases how art can seamlessly blend with nature, creating an unforgettable experience.
This isn't just any art show; it's a temporary outdoor gallery featuring 22 unique artworks crafted using lasers, mirrors, steel, glass, and fiber optics. The exhibition, organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), brings together 15 talented artists from both the UAE and 10 other countries. The theme, 'The Light Compass,' explores the beautiful relationship between light, land, and movement, with installations spread across Jubail Island and cultural sites in Al Ain.
One of the first installations visitors encounter is 'Gateway' by Lachlan Turczan. It's a series of steel arches fitted with lasers and light planes. As mist drifts through, it reveals shifting sheets of light along the walkway. Turczan designed this piece to encourage a slow, mindful journey, where the light changes with the wind, making each passage a unique experience.
Further in, the Dutch collective DRIFT presents 'Whispers,' a field of vertical fiber-optic stems that sway with the wind. Set within a crescent-shaped dune, these illuminated stems create ever-changing patterns. The collective emphasizes how the landscape leads the artwork, as the breeze dictates the field's composition.
For a more interactive experience, Montreal-based collective Iregular presents 'Public Squares.' This installation uses screens and digital surfaces to showcase four interactive works: 'As Water Falls,' 'Faces,' 'Control No Control,' and 'Fortunes.' These pieces respond to touch and motion, using cameras and sensors to track movement. The audience completes the artwork through interaction, with no moment ever repeating itself.
Argentinian artist Ezequiel Pini, known as Six N Five, presents 'Skyward,' a mirrored installation among the mangroves. A large, tilted mirror reflects the surroundings, while a sculpted stone sits at its base. As visitors linger, constellations slowly appear on the mirrored surface through an LED system. This piece encourages stillness and reflection, rewarding those who take the time to observe.
Finally, Malaysian artist Pamela Tan's 'Eden' features slim, powder-coated steel stems topped with glass spheres. These spheres catch and reflect light, creating a gentle glow across the sand and plants. Tan aimed to frame the existing beauty of the landscape, drawing attention to the small details often overlooked.
