Hi

1. Which preposition is correct?
2. Does the preposition usage vary according to the following noun?

Keep me updated about/of/on new songs.

I go with about but I don't know why.

There is often more than one preposition that works with a certain verb or adjective derived from a verb.

"Keep me updated" is another way to say "Update me often on/about something".

I think I'd use "on", but "about" sounds fine, too. Using "of" wouldn't work here.

Yes. I'd accept "with". It sounds very natural.

You're quite welcome, One Heart. keep me updated about/of/on/with (6)

I would like to point out a difference here:

Keep me updated with different songs. Here I might well understand that the songs themselves were updating me somehow. For instance, if they all use a certain kind of drum pattern, then perhaps that information is what I want to learn. Every time I hear a new song, I hear how that drum pattern is being used.

Keep me updated on new songs. When I hear this version, I think that you want me to tell you about any new songs I hear. I'd think that you weren't receiving any particular information from the songs. Instead, I'd think you just wanted to check them out.

Which leads me to a final point: one little preposition can imply many different things. It's always a good idea to clarify your thoughts with more language if you think there is any danger that your listener could misunderstand you.

"Keep me updated with ..." suggests to me that the other person will supply me with something tangible. For example, "keep me updated with new songs" sounds like they're going to be sending me mp3's of new songs regularly.

"Keep me updated on/about ..." simply means to keep me supplied with current information. "Keep me updated on new songs" means that they will be sending me information about the latest hits, new songs by bands I like, etc., but not sending me the songs themselves.

As owlman says, prepositions are tiny words that can make big differences in meaning.

    I agree with Owlman5.

The only thing I would add is that I don't much like "updated about." I suppose I don't care for the use of about because I associate updated with up to date, a phrase that is followed by on.
