Pittsburgh Penguins Star Scores in Sweden, 17 Years Apart
Evgeni Malkin, the veteran Pittsburgh Penguins center, is defying age with an impressive start to the season. At 39, he's leading the team in scoring with 22 points in 18 games and was, until recently, the NHL leader in assists. This performance is reminiscent of his earlier years, proving his enduring impact on the Penguins, who are currently near the top of the Eastern Conference.
The Penguins faced the Nashville Predators in the NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden, a stark contrast between the top-tier Penguins and the struggling Predators. Malkin's scoring prowess was on full display, opening the scoring in a bizarre yet memorable way. During the second period, his second shot of the frame resulted in a goal, as the puck deflected off Michael McCarron's stick, ricocheted off Juuse Saros, and rolled into the net.
This goal was Malkin's fourth of the season and his 518th in the NHL, tying him with Dale Hawerchuk for 40th place in the all-time goals list. At 39 years and 106 days, he became the oldest player to score a regular-season goal outside North America, surpassing Rob Blake's record from the 2007 Premiere Series in London.
However, the Penguins' lead didn't last. They held a 1-0 advantage into the third period, but Filip Forsberg tied the game with 1:10 left. The momentum shifted, and Steven Stamkos secured a 2-1 overtime victory for Nashville, ending their five-game losing streak.
Malkin's scoring in Sweden isn't a one-time occurrence. Seventeen years ago, on October 4, 2008, during the Premiere Series, he scored against the Ottawa Senators in the same arena. He picked off a pass, broke away, and scored a backhand goal while shorthanded. The Penguins won that game in overtime, a different outcome from this time.
Despite the loss, Malkin's performance showcased his longevity and skill. The rematch with Nashville in Sweden promises to be intriguing, with the Global Series adding an extra layer of intensity. Both teams displayed their potential, setting the stage for another competitive encounter on the international ice.
