India's Pace Master Dominates World Champs in Series Opener
In a thrilling display of bowling prowess, India's pace ace Jasprit Bumrah claimed a remarkable five-wicket haul, leading India to bowl out South Africa for a modest 159 runs on the first day of the first cricket Test. Bumrah's exceptional performance was a testament to his skill and precision, as he struck twice in the third over after tea, dismissing Simon Harmer and the last man, Keshav Maharaj, for a duck. This was his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket since his debut in 2018.
South Africa, the reigning world Test champions, elected to bat at Kolkata's Eden Gardens but faced an early challenge. They lost regular wickets, managing to survive just 55 overs of play. India responded with a strong batting display, ending the day at 1/37, with KL Rahul (13) and Washington Sundar (6) at the crease.
The absence of key pace bowler Kagiso Rabada due to a rib injury left a significant void in South Africa's lineup. Despite this, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton started brightly, forming a 57-run opening stand before falling to Bumrah's masterful bowling. India's bowlers soon took control, with spinner Kuldeep Yadav and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj each claiming two wickets.
The introduction of spin in the eighth over with Axar Patel's left-arm orthodox bowling didn't deter Markram, who continued to attack with boundaries. Bumrah, however, broke the opening stand by bowling left-hander Rickelton for 23, eliciting cheers from the large crowd. He then showcased his exceptional skill by dismissing Markram, caught behind for 31, with a rising ball that glanced his glove, allowing returning wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant to complete a diving catch.
Kuldeep Yadav continued his impressive performance, taking down Temba Bavuma, who was caught at leg slip for three. Wiwan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi, both scoring 24, took the team past 100 and into lunch. However, Kuldeep trapped Mulder lbw as he attempted a reverse sweep off the left-arm wrist spinner, and Bumrah ended de Zorzi's resistance, dismissing him in similar fashion. Both batters wasted a review, with the tracker confirming that the ball would have hit the stumps.
This match showcased Bumrah's exceptional talent and India's bowling prowess, leaving South Africa with a challenging task to recover from this early setback.
